He has an active research program in the implementation of pharmacogenomics in clinical practice and is the lead of the NHSE Network of Excellence in Pharmacogenomics and Medicines Optimisation.<\/p>\n<p>He is the immediate past President of the European Society of Human Genetics.<\/div><\/div><div id=\"ultimate-heading-848169f2fb32abbc6\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-848169f2fb32abbc6 uvc-1748 color-title accent-title-color uvc-heading-default-font-sizes\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-848169f2fb32abbc6 h2'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h2 style=\"--font-weight:theme;margin-top:50px;\">ABSTRACT<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"uvc-sub-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-848169f2fb32abbc6 .uvc-sub-heading '  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}'  style=\"font-weight:normal;\">Pharmacogenetic testing results occasionally need to be available rapidly to inform prescribing decisions. One such scenario is in the neonatal unit when antibiotics are prescribed to prevent or treat sepsis in newborn babies. One in 500 babies carries the mitochondrial (m.1555A&gt;G) variant which increases the risk of profound, irreversible, bilateral hearing loss.<\/p>\n<p>We have worked with Genedrive to develop a robust, easy to use point of care assay from a cheek swab and shown that this can be used in real world practice without disrupting clinical pathways (i.e. delaying the time to antibiotics and allowing safe prescription of an alternative).
